Volunteer Recognition Events  ( Back to Top )

Throughout the school year, the VIPS staff and board of advisors work to come up with new ways of thanking our many dedicated volunteers. The annual VIPS Recognition Dinner is one way; Volunteer Appreciation Week is another. We are always open to new ideas and suggestions. If you volunteer for an organization that thanked you in a fun or creative way, let us know about it! (vips@falmouth.k12.ma.us) No matter how we say it or show it, we want our VIPS volunteers to know that we appreciate everything they do for Falmouth Public Schools and our community!

VIPS Volunteer Recognition Dinner
May 5, 2009

Held annually since 1983, this dinner is a celebration of Falmouth Public School volunteers. All registered VIPS volunteers are welcome, but space is limited. At the dinner, volunteers are thanked by the VIPS staff and board of advisors and the school committee. Each year, local businesses and organizations sponsor the dinner to offset the cost of the meal. Awards are given to Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for each school, as well as special certificates of recognition to individuals or businesses whose contributions have benefited the VIPS community, and FHS recipients of the student volunteerism award for outstanding contributions to community service.

Celebrate Volunteers! Day/National Volunteer Appreciation Week
April 19-25, 2009
In Falmouth, volunteers are recognized, celebrated, and appreciated at each school; dates, times, and events vary. These celebrations are often orchestrated by staff members and administration at the school, with assistance from the VIPS program and building coordinators.

Nationally, Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering; every president since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually during the third full week of April, unless Easter or Passover occurs, then the Week is moved to the fourth week of April. Next year, National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 18 - April 24, 2010.

For national statistics about volunteers, including who is volunteering, average hours spent volunteering, and in what type of activity volunteers participate, check out the 2006 Statistics In Volunteering document, compiled by the the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics and included on the Points of Light Foundation's website.
